The United States Open Championship, commonly known as the U.S. Open, is the annual open golf tournament of the United States. It is staged by the United States Golf Association in mid-June, scheduled such that the final round is always played on the third Sunday, which is Father's Day.
It is one of the four major championships in golf and is on the official schedule of both the PGA Tour and the European Tour. Originally established in 1896, the Merion Golf Club is perennially one of America's top golf courses. The club features two courses known as the East Course and the West Course. The course has hosted four previous U.S. Opens, and past winners include Olin Dutra (1934), Ben Hogan (1950), Lee Trevino (1971), and David Graham (1981).
The Merion Golf Club is also featured in the novel "Back Spin" by Harlan Coben, which features a U.S. Open being played at the club.
The U.S. Open Championship was first played in 1895 and is one of 13 national championships conducted by the USGA.
