The Ryder Cup is a golf trophy, donated by Samuel Ryder, which is awarded biennially in an event called the "Ryder Cup Matches" between teams from Europe and the United States. The Matches are jointly administered by the PGA of America and the PGA European Tour. The Ryder Cup Matches involve various match play matches between players selected from two teams of twelve.
Currently, the matches consist of eight foursomes matches, eight fourball matches and twelve singles matches. The winner of each match scores a point for their team, with half a point each for any match that is tied after 18 holes.
The PGA announced that the 40th Ryder Cup in 2014 would be played at Gleneagles Golf Club. This championship PGA centenary course was designed by Jack Nicklaus and opened in 1993.
This course, set in the heart of Scotland boasts spectacular views of the countryside. The tees are graded at each hole in five stages, including a challenging 6,815 yards from the white markers down to 5,322 from the red. It is fitting that this championship should return the game of golf to its birthplace, Scotland.
